Green Steel Production
Breakthrough Solutions for Green Steel | VDMA TechTALK
In this presentation at the VDMA TechTALK on January 20, 2022, Dr. Alexander Fleischanderl addressed two major roadblocks on the way to a sustainable steel industry. Watch the video to learn what these two issues are and how they can be solved with breakthrough solutions.
Pioneers Talk #3: COP26, Climate Goals, and Green Production
Alexander Fleischanderl, just back from the COP26 climate conference, shares his experience and thoughts on what contribution the metals industry can make to global climate action.
Pioneers Talk #5: Greening the BF-BOF Steel-Production Route
Steel production is set to become more environmentally compatible than ever before. This session of Pioneers Talk features a discussion on how to “green” the integrated production route, which relies on two of the main emitters of CO2 in the process chain—the blast furnace and the basic oxygen furnace.
Green BOF Steelmaking — How to increase scrap rates and reduce CO2 emissions
Mini Mill Flat — A green and economic path for direct application products
Transforming Steelmaking — Roadmaps to net-zero carbon for the integrated plant
Taking sustainability beyond CO2
CO2 emissions and cost optimization of steelworks
In early November, a KOBM converter, upgraded from a former BOF converter by Primetals Technologies, was started up in the steel plant of HBIS Group Handan Iron and Steel in Handan, China.
In November 2021, Chinese steel producer Wuzhou Yongda Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (Wuzhou Yongda) issued the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for an EAF Quantum electric arc furnace and twin ladle furnace supplied by Primetals Technologies for a greenfield project in Wuzhou city, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Metalloinvest has contracted with Primetals Technologies and consortium partner Midrex Technologies, Inc. to supply the new HBI Plant (HBI-4) at Lebedinsky GOK (LGOK). The plant will be located in Gubkin, Russia, and will be designed to produce 2.08 million metric tons of HBI per year.

In April, the Hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction (HYFOR) pilot plant developed by Primetals Technologies was commissioned at the voestalpine site in Donawitz, Austria. First tests were successful. Use of 100% Hydrogen as a reduction agent reduces the CO2 footprint close to zero.
