  • Primetals Technologies delivers advanced torch-cutting solution for efficient scrap processing
  • Key benefits include zero dust emissions and greatly reduced noise levels
  • Capable of cutting various materials, including bundles of rolled bars

Konepeikko Oy, a leading Finnish recycling services provider, and Primetals Technologies have installed a state-of-the-art torch-cutting machine at Konepeikko’s facility near Ovako Imatra Oy Ab in Imatra, Finland. This innovative and environmentally friendly solution is part of Primetals Technologies’ latest advancements in scrap cutting and has already led to a significant reduction in noise emissions.

Enhanced Scrap-Cutting Efficiency and Safety

The new equipment has transformed Konepeikko’s operations, improving both efficiency and operator safety.

“We used to cut scrap with hand-cutting torches, but with this machine, the process is much faster and more operator-friendly. We clearly see the benefits in safer operations, and the camera monitoring feature gives us a good view of the torch-cutting process.”

Ossi Hulkko

Foreman at Konepeikko

The scrap cutting machine positions Konepeikko to meet growing industry demand for scrap. According to the World Steel Association, scrap use in steelmaking is projected to reach 1 billion tons annually in the coming years. As demand grows, effective scrap management is increasingly important, supporting the transition to green steel production.

A highly efficient dedusting system keeps dust emissions from the cutting process well below regulatory limits. The machine is housed in a moveable cabin, which further reduces noise levels. This technology enables Konepeikko to comply with strict Finnish environmental regulations while improving process efficiency and workplace safety.

Operators control the machine remotely from a desk outside the cutting cabin, supported by a video monitoring system. Predefined cutting programs based on recipes streamline operation and reduce processing times.

Leading Torch-Cutting Expertise

The new machine handles a wide range of scrap, including billets, blooms, and bundles of rolled bars. Its ability to integrate iron powder into the cutting process also allows for the cutting of tundish skulls, rolling mill rolls, and other hard, high-alloy materials.

“This is a very good investment for us, and we are a happy customer. The Primetals Technologies team worked closely with us to get the machine up and running on schedule,” added Hulkko.

Konepeikko specializes in recycling, focusing on the acquisition and processing of steel scrap. The company processes more than 50,000 tons of recycled materials annually and also manages construction waste from demolition sites.
