- New twin vacuum degassing (VD) plant to increase overall plant output and resolve meltshop bottleneck
- Streamlined operations with existing twin ladle furnaces support maximum productivity
- Startup planned for October 2027
Mexican producer Talleres y Aceros S.A. de C.V. (TYASA) has recently ordered a twin vacuum degassing (VD) plant from Primetals Technologies for its Ixtaczoquitlán site, located in the south-eastern part of Mexico. Startup is scheduled for October 2027.
Increased Performance and Capacity
The new VD plant will boost meltshop performance and capacity, resulting in higher overall plant output. TYASA will also be able to produce a greater volume of high-quality steel grades.
Primetals Technologies’ scope of supply includes key mechanical equipment, a vacuum pump system, fluid and hydraulic equipment, Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, electrical equipment, and advisory services for installation and commissioning.
Installation of the VD plant will be carried out with only minor impact on production. The existing plant layout, which was designed with a future VD plant in mind, and the utility supply system were previously installed by Primetals Technologies as part of earlier expansion packages.
Maximum Productivity
Primetals Technologies has created a tailor-made solution for this twin VD plant. It will be operated in close proximity, on the same rail tracks and with the same ladle cars as the existing twin ladle furnaces, which were also implemented by Primetals Technologies. The ladle cars will be modified by adding VD tanks on the existing car frames, allowing LF treatment while the ladle is positioned in the VD tank. This setup results in minimal crane involvement during production, as the ladle no longer has to be moved by crane between the LF and VD treatment steps.
The new installation will be dedicated to TYASA’s Castrip casting and rolling plant, enabling a new LF-VD-LF process. This approach maximizes productivity of the EAF Quantum electric arc furnace as well as the overall plant.
TYASA and Primetals Technologies
TYASA operates a wide range of solutions supplied by Primetals Technologies, including an EAF Quantum electric arc furnace, two twin ladle furnaces, a twin vacuum degasser, a Castrip plant, and a reversing cold mill. In 2018, TYASA awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to implement a combined galvanizing and color coating line to process strip from the Castrip line. Primetals Technologies also provides maintenance services through its large workshop in Mexico, underscoring the long-standing partnership with TYASA.
A family-owned company, TYASA employs more than 3,000 people and produces special steels, flat and coated steels, and steels for the construction industry.
