Primetals Technologies received an order from Dongkuk Steel to engineer and supply the entire mechanical equipment and automation system for a new 5 metre wide Plate Mill. The plant was constructed at the company’s Dangjin Works in South Korea. Primetals Technologies was part of a consortium for the project, with other partners being Sojitz Corporation, Japan, and Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea. Primetals Technologies was awarded the project as they were able to offer their leading technology for plate rolling, giving world class performance, and high availability. The Primetals Technologies bid was supported by its strong global reference list, a number of successful projects completed with Dongkuk including the supply of their No.2 Plate Mill and revamp of No. 1 Plate Mill.
Challenge
Dongkuk Steel required a Plate Mill that could roll plates in thicknesses from 4.5 mm to 150 mm, with widths up to 4,800 mm. The Plate Mill would be required to work efficiently to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of high quality steel plate.
Solution
A Plate Mill Stand, complete with SmartCrown® technology, designed to achieve a production of 1.5 million tonnes per year. Primetals Technologies provided the engineering and equipment for the complete mill line ensuring the optimal process flow from slab to finished plate. Primetals Technologies also supplied the entire automation system comprising:- the basic automation, including all the technological control and visualization systems, in addition to process automation and set up models including functions such as Plan View Pattern Control and thermo-mechanical rolling as well as automatic multi-plate rolling.
