To meet rising production demands while maintaining its strong commitment to environmental protection, Salzgitter Flachstahl expanded its steelmaking capacity with the installation of a new ladle furnace. A key requirement was the integration of a high-efficiency dedusting system that would align with the company’s sustainability goals and ensure clean air conditions in the workplace. The system was successfully commissioned in 2005.

Challenge

As one of the leading producers of high-quality cold-rolled steel, Salzgitter Flachstahl upholds strict environmental standards and operates with resource efficiency. The installation of a new ladle furnace—necessary for adjusting sulfur content directly in the ladle—introduced new emission sources to the plant. A major challenge was developing a dedusting concept to capture emissions from the ladle furnace and the lime/material handling systems within the existing steel plant infrastructure.

Solution

Emissions from the new ladle furnace and associated material handling systems are effectively captured at the source, ensuring a clean and safe working environment. The extracted gases are routed to a dedicated pulse jet filter system designed for efficient dust separation. Since the ladle furnace operates independently of the converter, a separate filter unit with adaptable operating modes was installed to ensure continuous and optimized dust control. Primetals Technologies delivered the project as a turnkey solution, covering engineering, automation, installation, and commissioning—providing a fully integrated, single-source system.
