In February 2004, Primetals Technologies received the contract from voestalpine in Linz, Austria for the engineering of secondary dedusting system for its LD converter (BOF) plant. The advanced dedusting concept meets the new and complex requirements such as increased suction capacity and improved extraction of secondary gases. Successful commissioning was completed in 2006.

Challenge

voestalpine faced the complex task of upgrading the secondary dedusting systems for three operational LD converters (BOF) within an existing steelmaking facility. The existing infrastructure limited suction capacity and lacked the flexibility to effectively manage fluctuating gas volumes and temperature peaks during hot metal charging. Additionally, aging filter systems and duct networks were no longer capable of meeting current environmental standards. The project required a customized, high-efficiency solution that could be seamlessly integrated with advanced automation and instrumentation to ensure long-term reliability and compliance.

Solution

Following detailed investigations, model calculations, and extensive development work, Primetals Technologies engineered and implemented an advanced secondary dedusting system (SEKU 2.1 and SEKU 2.2) for three LD converters (BOF) at voestalpine. As part of the upgrade, SEKU 2.1 was equipped with an extended suction capacity and a newly designed raw gas duct network, improving flow control and gas collection efficiency.

The SEKU 2.2 filter system was completely reconstructed to meet current performance and environmental standards. To ensure operational flexibility and optimized system performance, both SEKU 2.1 and SEKU 2.2 were interconnected.

To maximize capture efficiency during hot metal charging and process temperature peaks, each converter was outfitted with custom-designed static cooler units. In addition, new instrumentation and process automation systems were developed and installed, enabling precise control, real-time monitoring, and increased system reliability.

Results

  • Improved emission control
  • Compliance with environmental standards
  • Operational flexibility
  • Extended equipment lifetime
  • Enhanced process control

Benefits

  • Reduced clean gas dust content at the stack
  • Static cooling system
  • The operation of the off-gas system is fully automatic.
  • The converter PLC and secondary dedusting system is controlled by under-pressure and by the speed of the ID fans from each plant.

Conclusion

  • The SEKU 2.1 and 2.2 upgrade significantly improved environmental and operational performance.
  • Solutions were seamlessly integrated into the existing plant setup.
  • Off-gas capture and filtration efficiency were greatly enhanced.
  • New automation enables precise control and easier maintenance.
  • The project supports sustainable production and safer working conditions.
