Highest Mill Operating Speeds with Greater Consistency and Reliability
The Morgan High-Speed Pinch Roll and Laying Head system is typically located at the finishing end of a wire rod mill. It follows the mill's final stand, where it ensures smooth operation by controlling the tension and laying the wire rod in a uniform pattern. This improves the quality and consistency of the final product. Designed for sustained high-speed operation, the Morgan High-Speed Pinch Roll and Laying Head system plays a crucial role in the production of high-quality rod. The updated 6th generation laying head arrangement incorporates an integral segmented deflector plate for front and tail end control, as well as a rugged gear box with roller bearings. Design upgrades ensure a one-piece fabrication for reduced manufacturing time, as well as a reduced second harmonic. An improved pipe path and center of gravity (CG) position reduces vibrations and enables long-lasting pipe paths with less wear.
The Morgan Pinch Roll and Laying Head is designed to adapt seamlessly to the diverse requirements of modern mills, accommodating a wide range of product sizes and production rates. It is capable of handling finished rounds from 4.0 mm to 26.0 mm, offering exceptional versatility. The optional use of multiple pipe supports within the laying head enables efficient processing of all products, whether in clockwise or counterclockwise rotations. With the latest turndown design, the system can handle even scratch-sensitive grades, thanks to optional interchangeable vertebrae and rollerized pipe supports, which can be swapped quickly to minimize operational disruptions.
The Morgan High-Speed Pinch Roll and Laying Head system ensures consistent and reliable production of small products at high speeds and larger products at lower speeds. A key innovation is the patented self-regenerating SR Series® pipes from Primetals Technologies, which deliver consistently excellent coil patterns, well-formed head and tail rings, and significantly extended pipe life. These pipes enable mills to operate at higher speeds while maintaining superior ring patterns, allowing operators to achieve maximum production rates with minimal delays at the reform station.
Upgrading to the SR Series laying head enhances performance by producing improved ring patterns for smaller sizes at high speeds. This results in smoother operation on the Morgan Stelmor Conveyor, enabling more uniform cooling, better rod coil quality, and increased production efficiency. By reducing downtime and ensuring consistent performance, the system empowers mills to achieve higher throughput and improved product quality, even under the demanding conditions of high-speed production.
