Abstract: Driven by the decarbonization process, shaft-based direct reduction of iron ores is gaining increasing importance. MIDREX direct reduction plants provide flexible solutions for the immediate or future use of hydrogen, as well as options for carbon capture integration. The next generation of MIDREX plants incorporates a series of innovations designed to ensure that the MIDREX process remains the leading direct reduction technology in the years to come. This presentation examines the available plant configurations in greater detail, with a focus on MIDREX Flex and MIDREX H₂. A case study of the Dillingen project illustrates how these innovations are being implemented in practice.

Abstract: Digitalization and automation are key enablers for achieving cost-efficient ironmaking by systematically improving production stability, resource utilization, and operational predictability. Together, technologies such as time analytics, artificial intelligence, scenario simulation, automation systems, and expert systems reduce energy consumption, lower CO₂ emissions, extend equipment lifetimes, and lower production costs while also improving product quality and plant safety.
