Ladle Turret Condition Check

Targeted Non-Destructive Testing for Ladle Turrets

Identify fatigue at critical welds and structural interfaces and turn inspection findings into informed maintenance decisions

Non-Destructive Testing for Ladle Turrets

Non-destructive testing on a ladle turret is not general NDT applied to a large structure. It is targeted inspection of the specific welded connections that carry a rotating load of molten steel, selected on the basis of an engineering assessment of where fatigue actually initiates.

What We Inspect, and Why Those Locations

Fatigue damage in a ladle turret does not appear at random. It develops where stress concentrates: weld toes, weld roots, geometric transitions, and structural interfaces. Because major assemblies such as turning frames and ladle arms are joined through rigid welded connections, thermal expansion cannot always occur freely, adding localised stress on top of the mechanical load cycle.

Inspection is therefore concentrated on highly stressed areas — foundation frames, lever brackets, and critical welded connections — rather than distributed evenly across the structure.

Magnetic Particle Testing for Surface-Breaking Cracks

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is the primary field method for detecting surface-breaking fatigue cracks. Using magnetic flux leakage principles, MT reveals fine cracks that are not visible during standard visual inspection — at the scale where they are still a maintenance item rather than a structural concern.

All inspections are carried out by qualified and certified NDT personnel in accordance with applicable international standards.

Detecting What Periodic Inspection Cannot

Conventional non-destructive testing remains an essential part of structural inspection, but it is periodic by nature: it establishes condition on the day of the inspection. To close the gap between inspections, we are integrating advanced wireless crack monitoring technology, based on magnetic measurement principles, into future assessment concepts.

These sensors continuously monitor safety-critical structural areas by measuring changes in magnetic field characteristics associated with material stress variation and crack initiation — including subsurface propagation and root and toe cracks in highly loaded welded connections, which are the cases periodic inspection is least likely to catch.

Results That Feed a Decision

NDT findings are not delivered as a standalone test report. They are integrated into the overall engineering assessment of the turret, so that each indication is placed in context — its location, the load path it sits in, and its implication for continued operation — and translated into a practical action list and a defined planning horizon.
