Chinese Producer to Increase Silicon Steel Production Capacity with new Continuous Tandem Cold Mill

• Primetals Technologies to supply 6-stand continuous tandem cold mill and comprehensive automation solution
• Enables Fujian Kebao, a subsidiary of Sanbao Group, to increase production of silicon steel grades and tinplate

Chinese silicon steel producer Fujian Kebao Metal Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sanbao Group, has recently placed an order with Primetals Technologies for a continuous tandem cold mill (CTCM) at its steel plant in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. The new mill will be used to produce high-grade silicon steel, supporting Sanbao Group’s goal of becoming a leading provider of high-quality silicon steel and associated services in China.

High Strip Quality

Primetals Technologies is responsible for engineering, complete mechanical equipment, and a comprehensive electrics and automation solution, including a full Level 1 and Level 2 automation system. Initially, the mill will have a capacity of more than one million tons annually, with output expected to increase significantly over time.

This CTCM will be designed to achieve stringent thickness and flatness tolerances with high accuracy. The mill stands will be equipped with chamfered shiftable work rolls to optimize the strip edge profile. A multi-channel edge drop thickness gauge is installed after the last stand to minimize edge drop and enhance strip quality.

Advanced Shape Control 

The process models will incorporate state-of-the-art solutions, including self-learning neural networks, to ensure high-precision thickness control, optimized edge drop control, and advanced shape control. Highly precise models for edge drop setup and temperature regulation will allow for detailed control of key production parameters. 

Primetals Technologies will also supply the complete drive system, including the medium-voltage main drives and PLC cubicles. The electrics system is based on the Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) portal, which integrates high-precision automation control systems. The fully automated control and precise coordination of each rack will ensure high stability and continuous production, maximizing production efficiency.

Expanding in Steel Product Processing

Fujian Kebao Metal Products is leveraging Sanbao Group’s expertise to expand its presence in steel product processing. Sanbao Group operates both LD converter (BOF) facilities and electric arc furnace (EAF) minimill processes, supplying products to a wide range of industries, including ocean engineering, shipbuilding, high-pressure vessels, and the automotive sector.
