In a steel plant, Controllers provide basic automation and process control (Level 1) for a specific production unit using a standardized combination of hardware, sensors, and actuators. Its primary function is to maintain precise control over production processes and units in steel production. Controllers automatically adjust operations to stabilize and optimize process conditions, ensuring efficiency.

How do Controllers work?

Controllers continuously exchange information with Experts and Optimizers from Primetals Technologies. They send data about the steel production process to an Expert or an Optimizer, and in return, they receive instructions on actions to ensure efficient and safe production. If no Expert or Optimizer is installed, the operator must manually input this information. Controllers also continuously analyze and visualize the status of the production unit that they manage.

Controllers are equipped with the latest expertise for managing a production unit, ensuring the highest efficiency and quality in steel production. It provides this expertise through a standardized set of operating rules. Controllers also integrate with the Central Operation Cockpit (COC).

Controllers typically offer a wide range of functionalities, represented by various tabs on the controller's Human-Machine Interface (HMI). Human operators often find it challenging to monitor where their actions are needed to maintain a smooth steel production process. When a Controller is connected to a Central Operation Cockpit (COC), an event window appears in a designated focus area of the COC's integrated video wall, prompting immediate operator action.
