In a steel plant, an Optimizer monitors, controls, analyzes, optimizes, and visualizes production processes, assisting operators and engineers in maximizing production automation. The Optimizer manages a single production unit, such as an electric arc furnace, a caster, or a cold rolling mill. The primary focus is to enhance production efficiency and minimize costs. An Optimizer utilizes data analysis and process models to implement improvements and automate decisions, thereby achieving optimal performance. If the Optimizer is equipped with an expert system that uses a database, it can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to ensure smooth operation. If no expert system is implemented, an Optimizer can work with other Expert systems to enable production interventions or prompt human operators to make adjustments.

How does an Optimizer work?

An Optimizer is equipped with a comprehensive set of metallurgical models and packages that utilize process data collected from Checkers, Monitors, and Controllers, all of which are integral to a comprehensive approach to automation in steel production from Primetals Technologies. An Optimizer’s in-depth knowledge is stored in a database, enabling the software to automate, optimize, and simulate production processes.

Integrates with the Central Operation Cockpit (COC)

Optimizers typically offer a wide range of functions, spread across multiple modules, each represented by a separate tab on the Optimizer’s Human-Machine Interface (HMI). However, it is challenging for operators to keep track of where their attention is needed to maintain smooth production. When the Optimizer is linked to a Central Operation Cockpit (COC), an event window appears in a designated focus area on the COC’s integrated video wall, alerting operators when immediate action is required.
