  • Important Milestone Reached at Steelanol CCU Plant in Belgium

    November 2023 saw the first industrial-scale production of ethanol at the Steelanol plant in Ghent, Belgium. This marks an important step toward full operation of the Steelanol plant. The project is a collaboration between ArcelorMittal, LanzaTech, ERM, and Primetals Technologies. Steelanol is Europe’s first carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project. The plant captures carbon-rich industrial gases from the blast furnaces at ArcelorMittal Ghent and biologically converts them into ethanol.

According to the Austrian government’s press release, hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction (HYFOR) is a radical direct reduction process poised to become widely applicable soon. HYFOR is recognized as the world’s first direct reduction process for iron ore fines that does not require any prior agglomeration steps.

  • New Eco Slide Discs at hot-strip mill in South Korea reduce wear and maintenance-related costs

    South Korean steel producer Hyundai Steel has recently implemented Eco Slide Discs from Primetals Technologies at its steel plant in the city of Dangjin, located in the Western part of South Korea. Hyundai Steel has now reached maintenance intervals ranging from six weeks to several months. This dramatic improvement has resulted in an equally significant reduction of maintenance-related expenditures.
