Innovative Solutions for Electrical Steel and AHSS Cold Rolling
The Special Steel Mill is designed for the efficient rolling of hard materials, such as electrical steel and other special-purpose steels, including Electrical Steel and Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS). In the steel industry, the challenge of rolling thinner and harder materials requires specialized technology to ensure precision and quality. Special Steel Mills from Primetals Technologies, including the HZ Mill, 12-high CR Mill, KZR Mill, and 6-high Universal Crown Control Mill (UC-MILL), are equipped with small-diameter work rolls to meet these demands effectively.

HZ Mill (Advanced Split Housing ZR Mill)
The HZ Mill, an advanced split housing ZR Mill, is specifically designed to address the challenges associated with conventional ZR mills, such as limited roll gap opening and indirect-driven AGC cylinders. Primetals Technologies has enhanced this mill with a large gap opening, facilitating easy strip threading and recovery from strip breakage. The mill offers a flexible roll diameter configuration, allowing for greater versatility in processing various materials, including High-Strength Steel (HSS) and Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS).
Equipped with a high-response direct-driven AGC cylinder, the HZ Mill ensures precise gauge accuracy, while the rolling force is directly measured by a load cell, providing superior control and stability during the rolling process. These features collectively enhance productivity and ensure stable rolling performance, making the HZ Mill a robust solution for efficiently rolling hard materials.
HYPER UC-MILL
The HYPER UC-MILL is a newly developed mill featuring even smaller work rolls to achieve high performance of strip gauge and flatness control for high-strength steel (HSS) rolling. It is also applicable for the production of high-grade, non-grain-oriented silicon steel and thin products. The optimized combination of roll diameters brings out the best performance of the HYPER UC-MILL. In overall comparison, the HYPER UC-MILL’s work roll diameter is reduced by 20-30% from that of the standard UC-MILL to further reduce rolling force and the number of passes. The MH spindle is the fundamental technology to transmit the required torque for the HYPER UC-MILL.
