A few years ago, Chinese steel producer Xiangtan Iron and Steel started looking at solutions to improve its product quality. At the same time, the company wanted to modernize obsolete automation systems. Primetals Technologies presented a solution capable of addressing to both of these issues and was, as a result, awarded a contract for an extensive automation upgrade of Xiangtan’s plate mill located in Xiangtan, Hunan province.

Primetals Technologies has developed and implemented a ground-breaking portable safety technology known as the Digital Optical Caliper. This system eliminates the dangerous practice of manually determining the product section using wood or traditional calipers. The Digital Optical Caliper can precisely measure a variety of long rolling product sections, thereby identifying potential issues during production and promoting safer work practices.

An integrated quality control, production management, and transportation system from Primetals Technologies recently went into operation at ArcelorMittal Mexico’s production site in Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. The new solution orchestrates the entire quality management process in the hot-rolling mill and skin-pass mill.

Primetals Technologies has recently started up ESP line No. 2 at a Chinese steel producer in Hebei province, China. The customer’s first ESP line is in full operation since 2021. Line No. 2 is the 9th ESP line to be put into operation in the world. Thanks to the close and effective collaboration between Primetals Technologies and the Chinese steel producer, the startup of its second ESP line was exceptional in terms of swiftness and efficiency. The first hot-rolled coil was produced in endless mode only nine weeks after the beginning of cold commissioning, and the first coil of 0.8 millimeter thickness was produced just 50 days after.

Active Power Feeder is a key technology for green electric steelmaking. It utilizes a patented and proven medium voltage modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology in a ground-breaking power control system developed by experts at Primetals Technologies. BGH Edelstahl in Siegen, Germany, has signed an agreement with Primetals Technologies to test the Active Power Feeder solution at its 50-ton electric arc furnace (EAF).
