Primetals Technologies Modernizes LD Converter (BOF) at voestalpine Donawitz
voestalpine Donawitz has started up its LD converter (BOF) No. 4 following a revamp carried out by Primetals Technologies. A new air-cooling system has significantly reduced the operating temperature of the trunnion ring and converter shell, resulting in longer equipment lifetime.

South Korean steel producer POSCO has chosen Primetals Technologies to supply a new tilting drive for LD converter (BOF) No. 3-2 at its plant in Pohang. The new equipment ensures increased lifetime and reduced maintenance needs.

ArcelorMittal orders two LD converters (BOFs) and gas cleaning systems for steel plant in Brazil
ArcelorMittal has recently contracted Primetals Technologies for the revamping of two LD converters (BOFs) at its steel plant in Jõao Monlevade, Brazil. The order encompasses two new 135-ton converters, an upgrade of the primary dedusting systems, and complete electrics and automation packages. In addition to the new equipment’s technological advantages, the main influencing factors for ArcelorMittal’s decision were other recently completed projects and the fact that ArcelorMittal, over time, had built a strong partnership with Primetals Technologies in Brazil.

Salzgitter improves LD converter (BOF) process with automation upgrade from Primetals Technologies
Primetals Technologies has recently implemented an upgrade of the LD converter (BOF) process optimization system at Salzgitter Flachstahl in Salzgitter, Germany. The new Slag Expert model has optimized the use of lime, improved the hitting rate – i.e. the amount of successful heats in terms of carbon content and steel temperature – and reduced the number of reblows.

New LD converter (BOF) boosts productivity for ArcelorMittal Zenica
In Autumn 2022, Bosnian steel producer ArcelorMittal Zenica started up a new 125-ton LD converter (BOF), supplied by Primetals Technologies, at its plant in Zenica, Bosnia Herzegovina. As part of the project, engineers at Primetals Technologies have optimized the vessel shape, resulting in an increase in converter reaction volume by almost 30 percent.
