Primetals Technologies to supply new AOD line and to upgrade existing AOD line for Aperam Genk, Belgium
In September, Primetals Technologies received an order from Aperam Genk in Belgium to supply a new argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) production line and to upgrade the existing AOD 1 production line. The objectives of the project are to increase operational safety, to improve operating costs, and to further reduce environmental impacts via a dedusting system with provisions for heat recovery. Primetals Technologies will be responsible for mechanical equipment, electrics and automation as well as auxiliary equipment. The project will be carried out in a consortium with Austrian erection company SGS Industrial Services. Start-up is expected for mid-2023.

Primetals Technologies to supply steel plate finishing rolling mill for Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel in Japan
In June, Primetals Technologies received an order from Kobe Steel, Ltd. for a steel plate finishing rolling mill for its Kakogawa Works located in Kakogawa City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Implementation is scheduled for the late 2023 to early 2024. This project aims to counter the aging of the existing mill, which came online in 1972, and to strengthen the product supply system with stable quality and delivery time. Primetals Technologies will supply the steel plate finishing rolling mill, auxiliary and ancillary equipment, as well as on-site supervision for erection and commissioning.

Hydrogen-based ironmaking: MHI Australia and Primetals Technologies join Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Australia and Primetals Technologies, a member of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, have joined Australia’s Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC) as key partners. The Centre, a not-for-profit entity with significant government funding, aims to develop technologies to decarbonize Australia’s heavy industrial sector, leverage the country’s natural endowments in mineral and clean energy resources and seize the opportunity of growing export markets for certified low-carbon products. Over the next 10 years, Primetals Technologies and MHI Australia will be contributing financially as well as with their decades-long experience in iron and steel production to this effort. The companies will focus on research and development of hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore. This includes the novel HYFOR (hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction) technology currently being piloted by Primetals Technologies in Europe.

AM/NS Calvert selects Primetals Technologies to supply RH degasser and continuous caster
Primetals Technologies will supply an RH degasser, continuous slab casting machine, and material handling equipment to AM/NS Calvert for their new steel meltshop. A 50/50 joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corp. (NSC), the facility is located in Calvert, Alabama, USA. Once completed, the plant will be capable of annually producing 1.5 million tons of slabs to feed its existing hot strip mill. This expansion will give AM/NS Calvert full control of production quality and the flexibility to produce a broad spectrum of high-quality steel grades for the automotive industry. Construction is expected to take two years.

thyssenkrupp Steel awards major revamp and new-build contracts for core units at Duisburg and Bochum sites to Primetals Technologies
Following the recent approval of investment funds, thyssenkrupp is now forging ahead with implementation of the projects under its Strategy 20-30. The greater part of the contracts – revamp of the casting-rolling line, rebuild of an existing continuous caster, both in Duisburg, and construction of a new double reversing mill in Bochum – have now been awarded to Primetals Technologies Ltd., a world leading engineering and plant construction company for the metals industry.
