Two continuous slab casters from Primetals Technologies go into operation at Baosteel Zhanjiang

  • Five million metric tons of slabs produced per annum for demanding applications
  • Part of a new site for Baosteel in South China

Two two-strand continuous slab casters from Primetals Technologies went into operation in September at Baosteel Zhanjiang, a subsidiary company of the Chinese corporation Baoshan Iron and Steel Co Ltd. (Baosteel). The machines are part of a new Baosteel production site in Guangdong Province in South China. They have a total annual capacity of five million metric tons of high-quality, high-strength steel grades. Primetals Technologies received the order at the end of 2013.

The two continuous slab casters from Primetals Technologies are part of Baosteel's new production complex that has been constructed in Zhanjiang, a port city in Guangdong Province. After the first phase of construction, the production complex in Zhanjiang has an annual capacity of around 7.8 million metric tons of steel, which is produced in three 350 metric ton BOF converters, and treated in RH plants and ladle furnaces. The two continuous slab casters from Primetals Technologies process five million metric tons of the total output. The cast slabs are produced for further processing in the 2,250 millimeter hot rolling mill. The other 2.8 million metric tons of liquid steel will be cast in a casting plant that Baosteel is going to transfer to Zhanjiang from its Luojing plant.

The continuous slab casting machines are designed as bow type casters with a straight mold with a machine radius of 9.5 meters and a metallurgical length of 37 meters. They produce slabs in widths of up to 2,150 millimeters and a thickness of 230 millimeters. The casting speed can be varied between 0.7 and 1.95 meters per minute. The high-strength steel grades produced are used to make pipes, containers and rail cars; IF steels are also produced. The casting machines have straight SmartMold cassette-type molds, DynaFlex mold oscillators, and DynaWidth for automatic adjustment of the slab width. DynaGap Soft Reduction ensures that the slabs have a consistently high interior quality. The strand guide is equipped with Smart Segments. The combination of the Dynacs 3D cooling model with internally cooled I-Star rollers offers maximum flexibility in the secondary cooling.
